What is the difference between MCB and MCCB?

Introduction

Low-voltage circuit breakers are indispensable protective components within modern power distribution systems. They are widely adopted across power projects, building distribution systems, industrial facilities and OEM equipment assemblies. Two of the most frequently selected circuit protection devices are the Miniature Case Circuit Breaker (MCB) and the Moulded Case Circuit Breaker (MCCB).

Many electrical designers, project engineers and procurement specialists often confuse these two products because they both deliver circuit protection against overload and short-circuit faults. However, there are clear distinctions in rated current range, breaking capacity, adjustability and installation applications. Learning these differences helps engineers make correct component selection for power system design. As a professional low-voltage electrical manufacturer, Zhejiang C&J Electrical co., ltd. (C&J Electrical) supplies high-performance Adjustable MCCB and AC MCCB products. Our CJMM3 series moulded case circuit breaker covers most low-voltage distribution protection requirements and serves global customers for industrial and commercial power projects.

Core Differences Between MCB and MCCB

The Miniature Case Circuit Breaker is designed for low-current terminal circuits. It features compact dimensions, fixed protection parameters and simple internal structure. It is commonly used for residential, commercial terminal distribution and light-load control cabinets. In contrast, MCCB is an industrial-grade protective switch. It supports a much wider rated current range, higher short-circuit breaking capacity and adjustable trip settings. This makes MCCB suitable for heavy-load equipment and main branch circuits in industrial power distribution systems.

There are applications where MCBs and MCCBs can overlap, making a MCB an alternative choice. The two main drivers are cost and space. MCBs cost considerably less and take up less space in a control panel. For small industrial branch circuits and low-current commercial distribution systems, engineers can select Miniature Case Circuit Breaker as a cost-saving solution and save cabinet installation space.

Even so, MCBs have clear performance limits. When projects involve high operating current, high prospective short-circuit current and continuous heavy load conditions, only qualified AC MCCB and Adjustable MCCB can maintain reliable and safe circuit protection. In such heavy-duty scenarios, MCB cannot withstand large fault currents and cannot provide adjustable protection thresholds, which is why MCCB becomes the necessary choice.

Overview of C&J Electrical CJMM3 Series MCCB

The CJMM3 series Moulded Case Circuit Breaker manufactured by C&J Electrical is a reliable low-voltage protective device for low-voltage distribution networks. It complies with international standards IEC60947-1 and IEC60947-2. As a versatile AC MCCB, it is also one of our core Adjustable MCCB product lines, filling the performance gaps of Miniature Case Circuit Breaker in medium and high-current industrial applications.

Structural Characteristics CJMM3 series Moulded Case Circuit Breakers, in low-voltage distribution lines, can connect, carry and break current under normal circuit conditions, and can also connect, carry and break current under specified abnormal circuits for a certain period of time. It acts as a mechanical switch that protects lines and equipment when overload, short circuit, or undervoltage occur on distribution lines (undervoltage protection is an accessory function). It is widely used in low-voltage power consumption places such as electric power, construction, industry, and OEM.

This product line covers multiple frame grades: 125A, 160A, 250A, 400A, 630A. Its rated working voltage Ue supports 400/415V and 690V, matching global AC power networks. The breaking capacity covers commonly used specifications in the power distribution field: 20kA, 36kA, 50kA, 70kA, 75kA. Users can check the parameter table for detailed breaking capacity of each frame size. The breaker adopts a 3-pole design and offers two release types: single magnetic type and thermal magnetic type. The flexible release options are the key feature of this Adjustable MCCB. Three installation methods are available: fixed, plug-in, and drawer, to meet different cabinet installation and maintenance demands.

Working And Installation Conditions

CJMM3 MCCB has good environmental adaptability to handle various site conditions. Its normal working temperature range is -5~40°C. For special environments at -40°C ~-5°C or 40°C ~70°C, users need to refer to the temperature derating coefficient table for proper operation.

The storage temperature ranges from -40°C to 70°C. If the storage temperature is lower than normal working conditions, the product should be returned to working conditions and left to stand for at least 24 hours before being put into use.

Regarding humidity: When the ambient air temperature is +40°C, the relative humidity of the atmosphere cannot exceed 50%. At lower temperatures, it can be used under higher relative humidity conditions. For example: at +20°C, it can work under 90% relative humidity. The front side IP protection grade reaches IP40 with pollution degree III, resisting dust and moisture in factory and construction environments.

Application Scenarios

The CJMM3 AC MCCB is widely deployed in many low-voltage power applications. In power engineering, it is used for main circuit and branch circuit protection of low-voltage distribution cabinets. In building projects, it protects power supply systems for commercial buildings, residential complexes and public facilities.

Within industrial sites, CJMM3 MCCB provides reliable protection for production machinery, water pumps, fans and other heavy-load equipment. It also works well for OEM equipment integration. Many automation control cabinets and custom electrical machines adopt CJMM3 as the main circuit protection component.

Compared with Miniature Case Circuit Breaker, which is limited to small terminal circuits, CJMM3 MCCB can handle medium and high-current circuits. It offers adjustable trip settings as an Adjustable MCCB, allowing engineers to configure protection parameters according to actual load characteristics.
