How does a surge protector work?

In modern electrical systems, whether residential, commercial or industrial, electrical equipment is increasingly sensitive to voltage fluctuations. A voltage surge—also known as a transient voltage—can occur at any time due to lightning strikes, power grid switching, electrical equipment malfunctions or other factors. Even a short-duration surge can damage expensive electronic components, cause equipment failure or even fire hazards. Surge Protection Device (SPD), commonly known as a surge protector, is a key device designed to defend against such voltage surges. Zhejiang C&J Electrical co., ltd. (referred to as C&J Electrical) specializes in high-performance surge protection solutions, and its CJ-C40M series Surge Protection Device provides reliable voltage surge protection for various low-voltage power supply systems, effectively extending the service life of electrical equipment and ensuring system stability.

What is a Surge Protection Device (SPD)? Core Overview

Surge Protection Device (SPD) is a specialized electrical protective device installed in power supply circuits to limit transient overvoltage caused by lightning strikes, switching operations and other factors, and to conduct and discharge surge currents to the ground. Its core role is to “clamp” the overvoltage in the circuit to a safe level within a very short time, preventing the surge from damaging the connected electrical equipment.
Different from traditional protective devices such as fuses and circuit breakers, Surge Protection Device focuses on responding to transient voltage surges—short-duration, high-amplitude voltage fluctuations that are often ignored by ordinary protective devices. SPDs are widely used in various power supply systems, including TN-S, TN-C-S, TT, IT systems, and can be used as equipotential connections at the interface between LPZ1, LPZ2 and LPZ3 zones, forming an important part of the lightning protection system. C&J Electrical’s CJ-C40M series SPD is a high-performance D-level lightning protection product, designed in accordance with international and national standards, with excellent surge suppression performance and high safety and reliability.

How Does a Surge Protector Work? Core Principle

The working principle of a Surge Protection Device (SPD) is simple yet efficient: it monitors the voltage in the circuit in real time, and when a voltage surge occurs that exceeds the safe threshold, it quickly acts to divert the excess voltage and surge current to the ground, thereby protecting the electrical equipment connected to the circuit. The key details of its working process are as follows:
When the line voltage rises above the accepted level, the surge protector suppresses the excess voltage to prevent it from causing harm. Specifically, internal components called metal oxide varistors (MOVs) absorb the excess voltage and divert it to the ground wire, preventing it from reaching the connected equipment.
Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs) are the core components of the Surge Protection Device. Under normal working conditions, MOVs have high resistance and are in a high-impedance state, which does not affect the normal operation of the power supply circuit. When the line voltage suddenly rises and exceeds the rated voltage of the MOV, the resistance of the MOV will drop sharply instantaneously, turning into a low-impedance state. At this time, the excess voltage and surge current will be quickly absorbed by the MOV and diverted to the ground through the ground wire, avoiding the surge from flowing into the electrical equipment. When the line voltage returns to normal, the MOV will automatically recover to a high-impedance state, and the SPD will resume normal monitoring work.
In addition to MOVs, high-quality Surge Protection Device (such as C&J Electrical’s CJ-C40M series) is also equipped with a failure disconnection device. When the SPD fails due to overcurrent, overheating or breakdown, the failure disconnection device can automatically disconnect it from the power grid, preventing fault expansion, and at the same time, the visual alarm indicator can clearly show the working state of the SPD, facilitating maintenance personnel to check and replace it in time.

Core Functions of Surge Protection Device (Based on C&J Electrical CJ-C40M Series)

C&J Electrical’s CJ-C40M series Surge Protection Device integrates multiple core functions, providing comprehensive and reliable surge protection for power supply systems and electrical equipment. Its main functions include:
  • Transient overvoltage suppression: Quickly clamps the transient overvoltage in the circuit to a safe level (voltage protection level ≤0.7/≤1.0/≤1.2/≤1.5), preventing the overvoltage from damaging electrical equipment.
  • Surge current discharge: It can withstand a maximum discharge current of 20kA (8/20μS) and a nominal discharge current of 5/10kA, quickly discharging the surge current generated by lightning strikes and switching operations to the ground.
  • Ultra-fast response: The response time is less than 25 nanoseconds, which can quickly respond to transient voltage surges, leaving no time for the surge to damage electrical equipment.
  • Automatic failure disconnection: Built-in failure disconnection device. When the SPD fails due to overcurrent, overheating or breakdown, it can automatically disconnect from the power grid to avoid fault expansion.
  • Visual status indication: Equipped with a visual alarm window, green indicates normal working status, and red indicates fault status, which is convenient for maintenance personnel to check and maintain.
  • Hot-swap replacement: The module can be replaced without power failure, which greatly improves maintenance efficiency and avoids power outages affecting the normal use of equipment.
  • Equipotential connection: It can be used as an equipotential connection at the interface between LPZ1, LPZ2 and LPZ3 zones, improving the overall lightning protection level of the power supply system.

Application Scenarios of Surge Protection Device (SPD)

With the advantages of fast response, high surge withstand capacity and easy installation, Surge Protection Device (SPD) is widely used in various scenarios that require transient overvoltage protection, especially in places with high value of electrical equipment or high risk of lightning strikes. The main application fields and installation positions of C&J Electrical’s CJ-C40M series SPD are as follows:
